As a board member of USA Track & Field (USATF), I am proud that we are teaming with Outrun the Sun (OTS) to promote sun safety among USATF members. OTS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building national awareness of melanoma and other skin cancers. Together, we hope to keep healthy the millions of participants, coaches and fans in the sport of track & field.
As careful as I am about wearing sunscreen, a hat and clothing with a built-in sun protection factor (SPF) when I run, skin cancer continues to be a concern because of my passion for training and competing outdoors. I have been competing since I was 11 years old and have spent countless hours in the sun. Those hours add up to significant UV exposure. I encourage young athletes to be sun smart now to reduce your chances for skin cancer later in life! I believe that protecting my skin from UV rays helps ensure a clean bill of health from my dermatologist.
As a promoter of health and fitness through an active lifestyle, it is my duty to be knowledgeable about the threats of running in the sun. JOIN ME in pledging to be sun smart. Visit your dermatologist and register now for the Outrun the Sun Race in May.raceinmay.kintera.orgThis is a month-long program (the only one of its kind) that offers runners and walkers the opportunity to register online, take the “Sun Safety Pledge” and run or walk any day throughout the month of May. Show your support for skin cancer education and melanoma research. Visit the OTS website to join this virtual race and also to learn ways of preventing the most widespread cancer in America.
