2008 Olympian Shalane Flanagan and 2009 20K Champion Brett Gotcher to Debut in Houston

HOUSTON (Dec. 9, 2009) - American Shalane Flanagan (Pittsboro, N.C.), who won a bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2008 Olympics, will make her half-marathon debut in January at the 2010 USA Half Marathon Championships hosted by the Aramco Houston Half Marathon. 
 
The 28-year-old Flanagan has been one of the best middle-distance runners in the U.S. over the past six years, making two Olympic teams and setting American records on the track at 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 meters.

Lutz named Athlete of the Week

From USATF - INDIANAPOLIS - Marcus High School junior Craig Lutz (Dallas, Texas) has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the Nike Cross National Championships Saturday in Portland, Ore.

The Texas Class 5A state cross country champ, Lutz won the men's title in a course record 15 minutes 9.2 seconds. After taking the early lead in the race and then falling back into the pack, a late surge in the final few meters of the race saw Lutz edge past New Jersey's Joe Rosa for the win. Lutz's next race will be this weekend at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships.

Handler, McLarty Win Inaugural Santa Barbara International Marathon

By: Leah Etling, Running USA wire - SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - (December 6, 2009) - For the first time in decades, a marathon run returned to Santa Barbara as on Sunday morning an event field of 2,500 contested the Select Staffing Santa Barbara International Marathon, between the cities of Goleta and Santa Barbara. The coastal towns - two hours northwest of Los Angeles - have an active running community that had long supported the return of a marathon distance event. The "last" Santa Barbara Marathon was held in 1984.
