Heather Kampf, Biya Simbassa to Compete at U.S. Olympic Track Trials in Eugene July 1-10; Team USA Minnesota Board Member Lance Elliott to Run in Masters 1500m Exhibition Race at Trials

Minneapolis/St. Paul – June 28, 2016 – Team USA Minnesota’s Heather Kampf and Abbabiya “Biya” Simbassa will be among the competitors at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field that will be held July 1-10 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.  The top three athletes in each event who have achieved the Olympic qualifying standard will make the U.S. team that will compete in the Olympic Games that will be held in Rio de Janeiro Aug. 5-21. Also running in Eugene during the Trials will be Board member Lance Elliott who will race in the men’s masters 1500 meter exhibition event. Kampf qualified to compete in the women’s 1500 meters with a time of 4:04.46, well under the qualifying time of 4:09.50 for the U.S. Trials.  The four-time USA 1 Mile Road Champion and U.S. team member in the 1500m at the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships also has met the Olympic qualifying standard of 4:07.  In a recent tune-up race at the adidas Boost Boston Games on June 17, Kampf posted 2:00.55 in the 800 meters.

The 1500 meters will be contested over three days, starting with the first round on July 7, the semi-finals on July 8, and the final race on July 10.  A field of 30 women will be entered in the event and will advance by place and time.

Simbassa will compete in the men’s 5000 meters, with the first round held on July 4 and the final on July 9.  Although Simbassa’s 5000m time of 13:29.51 is just outside of the automatic 13:28 U.S. qualifying time, it is fast enough for him to be selected to fill the field of 24 competitors.  During his first year as a professional runner, Simbassa took his 5000m time from a collegiate best of 14:01 to 13:29.51.

The 45-year-old Elliott, who is a Team USA Minnesota Board member and one of Kampf’s training partners, will run in the masters 1500m exhibition race on July 3.  The exhibition features the top 12 over-40 men in the nation.  He qualified for the event with a time of 4:06.60.  Last year at the USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Elliott competed in the men’s masters 3000m at Hayward Field.
