Ohioan Wins 2010 Nationwide Better Health Columbus Marathon

Event records set in Nationwide Better Health Columbus 1/2 Marathon and Hand Cycle Events  - (COLUMBUS, OH)– Nearly perfect racing conditions paved the way to three event records being broken at the 31st anniversary Nationwide Better Health Columbus Marathon and 1/2 Marathon.  

Nationwide Better Health Columbus Marathon Race
For the fourth year in a row, an Ohioan bested a field of 5,000 marathoners. In his debut marathon, Jason Ordway of Bellbrook took the grand prize and met his goal of qualifying for the Olympic Trials in 2:18:08. The 2012 USATF Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying standard is 2:19:00.

Hebron, Kentucky’s Peter Kemboi (2:21:10) held off Cleveland’s Fred Kieser (2:21:49) for runner up honors.  Ashland’s Brandon Bauer (2:22:42) and Russia’s master Sergey Kaledin (2:24:02) rounded out the top five.

In the female marathon race, Elena Kaledina of Russia ran a dominating race to win in 2:44:20 – more than five minutes ahead of the second place finisher, Euclid’s Elizabeth Hansen (2:49:53).  Rochester, Wyoming’s Jennifer Bigham (2:51:55), Sterling’s Nicole Camp (2:52:48) and McMurray, Pennsylvania’s Michelle Corkum (2:53:39) finished next.

Marathonprize money awarded was $2500 for first place; $1000 for second place; and $750 for third place in both the men’s and women’s races.
 
Nationwide Better Health Columbus 1/2 Marathon Race
An event record was set in both 1/2 Marathon events. Kiprotich Kitui of Santa Fe, NM broke the event record with a time of 1:03:30. Last year’s 1/2 Marathon winner, Daniel Kipkoech, placed 2nd in a time of 1:04:18.  A trio of Canton runners finished next – Ryan Kienzle (1:05:50), Andrew Carnes (1:05:59) and Nik Schweikert (1:06:17).

 In the female 1/2 Marathon race, Allison Grace of Columbus, OH broke the event record with a time of 1:14:20 in her debut 1/2 marathon. Mariska Kramer of the Netherlands came in second with a time of 1:14:42.  Bellbrook’s Ann Alyanak (1:14:50) finished third. Last year’s winner Nicole Fisher (1:16:12) finished fourth while Fort Wayne’s Indiana’s Ashley Ade (1:18:28) palced fifth.
 
Prize money awarded for the 1/2 Marathon was $1,000 for first place; $750 for second place and $500 for third place in both the men’s and women’s races.
 
Hand Cycle and Wheelchair Race
In the third year of the hand cycling division, Dane Pilon of Fayetteville, NC, broke the course record he set last year at the Nationwide Better Health Columbus Marathon with a time of 1:10:47. Chad Johnson of Charlestown, IN placed first in the wheelchair division in 1:49:17.
 
Prize money awarded in both the hand cycle and chair racing divisions was $1,250 for first place; $750 for second place; and $500 for third place.
 
The sold-out, record registered field of 15,000 marathon and ½ marathon runners and walkers enjoyed the support of tens of thousands of spectators and nearly 80 live bands and other entertainment along the course which includes parts of Columbus, Bexley, German Village, Short North, Upper Arlington, Grandview Heights and Victorian Village.
