Allstate Life Insurance℠ Atlanta 13.1 Marathon® and Karhu 5K Results

Reuben Mwei, of Kennesaw, Ga., won first place in the male division with a time of 1:09:12. The 26-year-old improved upon his second-place finish from a year ago.  Jay Stephenson, of Rome, Ga., took second place with a time of 1:09:54, while Alan Blackfrom Hillsboro, Ga., earned third place with a time of 1:10:53. 

On the women’s side, Justyna Mudy, 27, of Rome, Ga., claimed first place with a time of 1:17:51.  Like Mwei, she also finished in second place in last year’s race. Placing second was Tamara Karrh from Marietta, Ga., with a time of 1:22:48, and Meagan Nedlu of Salem, Mass., took third with a time of 1:23:35. 

The Karhu 5K provided an extra incentive to all competitors as the Finnish shoe company encouraged all runners to try to "Beat the Karhu Bear."  The first 10 runners who "Beat the Karhu Bear” received a coupon for a free pair of Karhu running shoes.  Only four runners were able to accomplish the feat with David Nierenberg of Goldsboro, N.C. leading the way with a first-place finishing time of 0:17:55.  The Bear costume was worn by recent Life University graduate, Bill Moss of Marietta, Ga., as he placed fifth overall with a time of 0:20:55.  

The course encompassed Town Brookhaven in Atlanta's Brookhaven community, situated on Peachtree Road, north of Lenox Square Mall and Phipps Plaza, and bordering the historic Oglethorpe University.

In conjunction with this year’s race, Allstate® Life Insurance and non-profit organization Give Your Sole collected moderately used athletic shoes from runners and spectators to benefit The Gateway Center, an organization helping Atlanta area men and women move out of homelessness.  Several hundred shoes were donated in exchange for a free pair of flip-flops for runners to wear home.

Upcoming 2013 Allstate Life Insurance℠ 13.1 Marathon® Series races include – Los Angeles– January 13:  California Dreamin’ on a Winters Day.  Runners are treated to beautiful Southern California weather on a course that starts right along the Pacific Ocean on the Venice Boardwalk, and then a very flat and fast course finishes up in Playa Del Rey;Miami Beach – March 9:  Runners will take the scenic route of South Beach with a start on famous Ocean Drive and a beautiful beach side finish and a chance to witness the crowning of the Half Marathon National Champion; New York – March 23:  will be run within historic Flushing Meadows Corona Park, home of the 1939 and 1964 World's Fairs, and begins in front of Arthur Ashe Stadium;  Chicago – June 8:  runners will enjoy the South Side of Chicago with a beautiful course that starts and finishes at the South Shore Cultural Center and runs right along Lake Michigan.
